ColemanGrossi is a unique band formed by two sets of brothers: Jim Coleman, Rick
Coleman, Ray Grossi, and Joe Grossi. They have been a band of brothers from the
start, Jim and Ray graduated high school together and Rick and Joe graduated
together. In the mid 70’s Jim and Rick started playing but at the beginning, believe it
or not, Jim was to play drums and Rick was to be on guitar; thank God they made the
switch with Rick on drums and Jim on guitar. They recruited another guitar and bass
player but needed a singer. Ray knew Jim & Rick were looking for a singer so Ray
tried out, never really singing for a band before and got the job.
The first band was called Nightwinder with Jim (lead guitar), Rick (drums), and Ray
(lead singer). After some time, as most bands do, they broke up and Ray joined
Royal Star, Jim and Rick formed another band called Horizon. Horizon eventually
broke up and Jim went on to play lead guitar with a band called Wanted. Then in
1984 Flash was formed with Ray, Jim, and Rick; these 3 have been together ever
since. Later the name was changed to Checkmate. In 2002 Joe joined and the band
is what it is today. Due to the popularity of the name Checkmate they couldn’t release
original material under this name. With the two Coleman brothers and two Grossi
brothers it made sense to change the name to ColemanGrossi. The name was
changed but the band stayed the same, they started releasing their originals in 2006.
The band increased their popularity, performing for area festivals including Grundy
County Corn Festival, Grundy County Fair, Channahon Three Rivers Festival,
Wilmington Catfish Days, Gardner Days, Seneca Summer Fest, South Wilmington
Party in the Park, Mazon Fun Days, Diamond Days and Carbon Hill Homecoming.
They can also be seen on a semi-regular schedule appearing at Empress Casino in
Joliet. They have backed up such acts as Foghat, Mark Farner from Grand Funk
Railroad, and the Buckinghams. Their song list includes classic rock to current
selections, including their own original pieces. They also perform private events as
weddings, birthday parties and holiday celebrations. ColemanGrossi is a must see
show. As Keith Shannon (light/sound man for ColemanGrossi) would say, “Come see
the band once you’ll come see them again.” They don’t only play a large variety of
music that everyone loves but puts on a show to remember.
